Written by Naoki Urasawa, 20th Century Boys debuted as a manga in 2000, winning such prestigious awards as, Kodansha Manga Award in 2001 and an Excellence Award by the Japan Media Arts Festival in 2002. 20th Century Boys’ English translation has been in America since February of 2009 and is a total series of twenty-two volumes, the fourth volume currently set to be in stores next month.
This is the story of a boy named Kenji in the year of 1969, creating a fantasy book with his classmates called, The Book of Prophecy, in which they battle evil to save the world. The tale jumps ahead to Kenji as an adult in the year of 1997, beginning to notice strange events he wrote about as a child happening around him in the real world. A strange cult is also lead by a man called, Friend, who wishes to fulfill Kenji’s final childhood prophecy, which causes Kenji to gather his old classmates together to stop the cult.
The massive story of 20th Century Boys has been broken down into three films, directed by Yukihiko Tsutsumi, director of Happily Ever After, Sushi King Goes to New York, and The Bandage Club. The first film debuted in Japan on August 30th, 2008, the second on January 31st, 2009 and the third slated for release on August 29th, 2009 in Japan. The trilogy has cost an astounding six billion yen and follows the manga almost perfectly.
Viz Pictures, affiliates of Viz Media, has now licensed the North America rights to DVD and theatrical distribution of the trilogy. Viz will be releasing the first two films on DVD later this year and the third film next year, as it has yet to be shown in Japan. 20th Century Boys Chapter One is set to play at the grand opening of the New People theatre in San Francisco on August 15th, after success of the movie playing in many other film festivals.
The films have received very positive reviews from film goers and manga fans a like. While the movie cannot incorporate every aspect of the original source, the general consensus is they did a very good job with the allotted time. Fans especially enjoyed the suspense and mystery brought to the screen, as well as the soundtrack. 20th Century Boys broke the Japanese box office over the Death Note live-action films, earning 40 million from just the first film.
