Anime relationships, that is. So we are sorry to disappoint those who thought we had gotten desperate enough to become a romance blog, but know that in a way we are going to delve into the subject of romance, relationships and the fact that many (to the point where we dare say most) titles seem to never bother to have any sort of resolution to romantic relationships.
There are many shows that break away from this unusual and annoying trend, so it’s best to get them out of the way to avoid dealing with them later when I babble on about the subject at hand. These shows are usually fantastic and go beyond the norm by providing us with anything from a simplistic and safe approach to how relationships work, to an upstanding show of fantasy with character development at its core.
Keep in mind however, that these shows aren’t the golden standard to measure up all the others and are instead rare gems. They are usually self-contained stories that go from A to B and give us a conclusion, which more often than not goes along nicely with the centrepiece of a relationship between two leads. Here’s the thing, though; most of the animes where romances are resolved have the relationship bit as a center piece.
And that’s what gets annoying about the other ones. See, if you are going to bother to include romantic elements into an anime that has a backstory filled with action, adventure, horror, etc. THEN DON’T MAKE THE VIEWER SIT THROUGH IT WITHOUT RESOLUTION.
If I had a penny for every anime that had an episode or tow where everything came to a halt for a couple of characters to face off due to romantic issues I would be rich. Hell, it’s not that side stories are bad, I love ‘em, it’s just that they have no place to be within a story if they lead nowhere other than some stupid kiss or fanservice related situation. I understand that a good story has to have several elements working for it; from romance, to comedy and even drama, but here are times when several animes just drop the ball and seem to ad an scene for the “just because.”
I have avoided naming specific animes so far to save myself from fanboyism, so I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt and leave it up for discussion in our forums or a later article.
Romance is sometimes a great element that adds a lot of flavor to a story, but it can go awry if you don’t handle it well. It simply can’t be a mere plot device, it has to be an integral core of the character’s personality or add something more than a scene where sad music plays during a conversation. Romance has room to grow in a story, but I rather see it shine due to its absence than have to endure shoehorned dialog between “lovers.”
