One Manga To Close

One Manga To Get The Axe

Many Otakus without the means, or the possibility to get their hands on paperback manga found their way to One Manga. Many others sought out the freely and speedily updated volumes, or the comfort of reading it in more than a single format. But this has all, sadly, come to an end. So, we bring to you the bad news in case you hadn’t planned on paying your respects yet.

Abandon Ship!

As much as one cannot advocate for piracy without getting into either a heaping amount of legal trouble, or sounding like an avid thief to conservatives, One Manga provided a free service to many but some may be saying that it doesn’t matter, for many other sites stand on its wake.

Those also many grow thinner by the minute, increasing legal pressure by manga publisher are forcing these sites off the net. So those of you who depend on scanlated manga, whether it’s because of your financial circumstances or your country’s lack of a given volume (In which case, hey welcome to my world) chances are that your favored site will soon face a similar fate.

Actions such as these don’t stop with one site. Mangafox was recently censored and deprived of its “Adult” manga (although they are quietly being updated and re-added) and MangaToshokan was given similar treatment, prompting them to switch over to Korean and Chinese manga.

Taken from the popup when visiting the main site:

“There is an end to everything, to good things as well.”

It pains me to announce that this is the last week of manga reading on One Manga (!!). Manga publishers have recently changed their stance on manga scanlations and made it clear that they no longer approve of it. We have decided to abide by their wishes, and remove all manga content (regardless of licensing status) from the site. The removal of content will happen gradually (so you can at least finish some of the outstanding reading you have), but we expect all content to be gone by early next week (RIP OM July 2010).

We are not here to give a stance on freedom of expression and copyright laws in the light of internet piracy. No, what we are here for is to report on a familiar and well known site that provided a somewhat necessary service. So go check out their library, read the rest of their notice and do your thing. We will be here to bring you the relevant news.
