Award winning director Satoshi Kon has been reported dead by way of a statement released via Otakorp’s Board of Directors and confirmed by Masao Maruyama, co-founder of Madhouse, who had written on his twitter about the death of one the studio’s Directors without clarifying as to which. Satoshi Kon’s a name that probably doesn’t ring much a bell to many a young otaku, but it’s nonetheless a big name when it comes to anime Directors. He first jumped into the spot-light with his feature film “Perfect Blue”, a rich psychological thriller, that in all honesty was rough around the edges and had a couple of flaws but still managed to tell a story and engage the viewer in such a way that it drew international attention towards this man.

He later on went to work on critically acclaimed films such as Millennium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers (a personal favorite), Paranoia Agent, Paprika and he had begun to work on Yume-Miru Kikai shortly before his death. Satoshi Kon’s films were amazing. They delivered a strong message by the time the titles rolled and he clearly reached the pinnacle of his excellent career in 2003 with Tokyo Godfathers, which is not to say that his previous hadn’t been great in their own regard.

We would like to extend a message to any otakus out there with a knack for the classic and unique, go ahead and do yourselves a favor by watching any of this man’s great works and you’ll find yourself fully satisfied and understanding just how much of an impact his death really is.
