Kaze no Stigma and Midnight Cafeteria Updates

Fujimi Shobo, a Japanese publishing company, has officially announced that the author of Kaze no Stigma, Takahiro Yamato, officially passed away on July 20, 2009.  The story, created in 2002, now remains incomplete with eleven volumes.  Kaze no Stigma was produced as an anime in 2007 by the studio, Gonzo, (Hellsing, Full Metal Panic!, Trinity Blood, and Romeo x Juliet) finishing with twenty-four episodes.

Kaze no Stigma is the story of a boy named Kazuma, who is banished from his family after failing to learn Enjutsu, the ability to control fire.  However, four years later Kazuma returns to his relatives as a master of Fuujutsu, the harnessing of wind power.  He is reunited with his younger brother, Ren and Ayano, the family member who succeeded Kazuma as the heir to the family sword.  Only after his return, family members begin dying by Fuujutsu and Kazuma finds himself defending his innocence.

News regarding the story’s continuation has not been announced.  Although, for the sake of all its current fans and supporters, I do hope they can find a way to bring the story to a logical conclusion, should its wrapping up bring rest to the anime community.  The industry has had to say goodbye to too many artists and storytellers of late, both in America and in Japan, and I find it especially unfair when these are gifted professionals who have to leave their work behind and incomplete.

Shinya Shokudo, or Midnight Cafeteria, is the acclaimed manga of Abe Yaro.  The story has been nominated once for the Manga Taisho Award in the past and has recently announced that it will have a live-action spinoff that will be airing in Japan this fall on their TBS station.  Midnight Cafeteria is about a mysterious restaurant in Shinjuku that only opens at midnight and has no set menu.  The chef is willing to make whatever the customer wants.

The show will star Kaoru Kobayashi, famous for his role in Hayao Miyazaki’s Princess Mononoke, as the restaurant’s master chef.  Kobayashi recently won the Japanese Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his work on the film, Tokyo Tower.  The news of this live-action adaptation was announced on the cover of the magazine, Shogakukan’s Big Comic Spirits where the story is printed, but no other details have been released since.  The manga’s fourth volume will be available in Japan on August 28, 2009.
