In what could be a thrilling and amazingly (if not extremely bizarre) good development, EA and Bioware have decided to join forces with FUNimation to create an anime based off their Dragon Age universe. So hold on to your underwear because this could be amazing or amazingly bad.
A mature fantasy universe that was successfully brought to life with the creation of the excellent RPG Dragon Age: Origins from which a series of novels, comics and a sequel were spawned is set to be brought to life by a straight to DVD feature film (set to be released in 2011). The catch? It’ll be anime, as said by the parties involved, starting off with FUNimation’s take on the announcement:
“We are thrilled to be working with EA and BioWare on the production of the Dragon Age anime feature,” said Gen Fukunaga, President and CEO of FUNimation. “We are going to be bringing the classic visual and storytelling techniques found in anime to create a film that will extend the narrative of the world BioWare has created.”
“Anime is a great medium for us to continue the robust Dragon Age story,” said Mark Darrah, Executive Producer for the Dragon Age franchise. “Partnering with FUNimation ensures that we are delivering the exceptional quality and entertainment value that our Dragon Age fans expect.”
EA’s opinion on the matter seems to be a bit on the pretentious side, but if the anime manages to be as half as good as the source material (the game) then we could be looking into something promising! But then again, it’s worth noting that this has all the elements to spell a major fiasco; it’s essentially a videogame adaptation, plus it includes what amounts to the most amazingly westerner take on anime you can have without going overboard a la Hollywood.
Something similar took place with the release of “Halo Legends”, a mixed series of adaptations made by great anime studios and directors alike that came off a bit short of its promises, mostly because their particular takes tried to expand on the Halo universe (which in itself is spread as thin as it could possibly get) but it still managed to deliver a (somewhat) decent final product. Lets hope that a more focused effort based around what most found to be a great story with strong characters leads to a good product (or at least a decent rental).
